Welcome to The Sharpist. Sharpening for surgical instruments, quality salon shear sharpening, and culinary knife sharpening are our specialties.

COVID-19 UPDATE: The Sharpist has been vaccinated. We will continue to operate in the same masked, sanitized, and socially distanced way we have been. This is our new normal.

The Sharpist is a state of the art mobile surgical instrument, salon shear, commercial blade, and residential knife sharpener. We offer contact-free curbside service at Denver area address by appointment. Whether you’re a home, restaurant, surgical facility, salon, barber, neighborhood, HOA or other organization, we are happy to arrange a sharpening visit for you. We just require a 20-pc minimum for mobile calls. If you have that many, great! Customers unable to gather that many knives, shears, and other tools from their own collection will often link up with a neighbor, friend, or relative to batch work and meet that minimum. Feel free to get in touch for details.

During the season from May-October, the Sharpist also offers onsite, same-day sharpening service at one bustling Denver farmers market: Central Park (formerly Stapleton) Farmers Market on Sundays May-November from 9am-1pm. This is how many of our residential sharpening customers take advantage of our service. No appointment is necessary at market — service is first come, first served, and turnaround for orders is generally 60-90 minutes. Medical Instrument Sharpening

Worn surgical instruments are often prohibitively expensive to replace, but the vast majority of these tools can be sharpened at a fraction of that cost. Whether you’re part of a veterinary facility, civilian or governmental clinic or hospital, dental surgical center, or other surgical center, we can help. The Sharpist’s medical instrument sharpening service takes place either same day onsite in the Denver area, or by mail with a 1-2 day turnaround. Here are a few examples of our surgical sharpening work.

Medical sharpening service includes sharpening, alignment, and tension adjustment (if applicable) for

  • Precision and specialty surgical scissors – $8-$12 depending on type and condition
  • Bandage scissors – $8
  • Dental elevators – $8-$10
  • Other surgical – $6-$12 depending on type and condition

Surgical instrument sharpening is extraordinarily delicate work, and we understand that it’s not always clear to technicians when gathering instruments whether they can or should be sharpened. We make that part easy: it is the policy of The Sharpist that any surgical instruments that cannot be sharpened will be returned free of charge, so it does not hurt to include even questionable items with your order.

We also provide, on request, a service summary after your surgical sharpening order is complete, including 60X magnified before and after photos of your surgical instruments, for educational purposes.

To schedule onsite surgical instrument sharpening service, use the contact page on this site, email, or call 719-201-4570.

If shipping, please print and complete the order form above and include it with your shipment. We will be in touch with a quote as soon as your order is received.

When shipping your surgical instrument sharpening order, send sterilized instruments only, and include enough packing material to reduce shifting in transit. Do purchase postal insurance for your order, and we will do the same on the return shipment. Use this shipping address:

About Me

My name is Devin James Fry. I love the feeling of being next to the wheel or at my stones. It’s calm, precise, even meditative at times. I’ve spent more than thirteen years as a professional surgical instrument, veterinary, and culinary sharpener refining my skills via training, seminars, theoretical discussion with other professionals in the field, and practice, practice, practice.

I learned the basics of sharpening as a teenager in Cañon City, Colorado. I spent eleven years in Austin, Texas playing music by night and refining my sharpening skills by day. Slowly and surely I gained trust from clients there, until at the time of my move to Denver in early 2020, I had long been the highest rated sharpener in central Texas.

Now I am pleased to offer my services in Denver. I make a great effort to come to an understanding with every single person for whom I work. The relationship between sharpener and client has to be one of earned trust.

I’m grateful for testimony:

I highly recommend the Colorado Sharpist.
I have been a practicing veterinarian for 56 years, 45 of them as a board certified veterinary dentist, performing root canal therapy and oral surgery on dogs and cats for a living and donating my time to lions, tigers, and bears ‘Oh My’ throughout the United States. My dental team and our surgical team at VCA Highlands Ranch Animal Specialty and Emergency Center have used the Colorado Sharpist to keep us the sharpest. His state of the art van and curbside service are of the highest quality and his skills in revitalizing surgical equipment are extremely fine. Knives, axes and surgical instruments have been an important part of my life for more than 60 years and this man has a fine touch and intense desire to deliver the highest of quality service.

Visit Devin and get your knives sharpened by a true craftsman at a great price.
Zach M.

He even re-edged a blade that was nicked and chipped to restore it its brand new look. Craftsmen like Devin are rare. Have him restore your blades to their proper cutting glory.
Jon C.

Our knives were sharpened to perfection…probably sharper than when originally purchased!
Isaac C.

Right now I am in safe sharp knife heaven.
Lansing B.

I’m now sitting in my kitchen laughing while slicing through potatoes with ease.  It doesn’t hurt that he’s a really nice dude too, and seems to really care about his craft and customer.
